The administration, staff and students at University of Denver are to be commended for the way Wednesday's presidential debate was handled. The impact on the DU neighborhood was minimal. Road closures were a bit of a hassle, and some local merchants were disappointed that their business took a hit Wednesday. We were in Jerusalem restaurant at noon and it was virtually empty. But the DU neighborhood buzzed with excitement all day, there was no problem with parking, and the university looked magnificent as the backdrop in every TV news shot, with an estimated 200 million viewers worldwide watching the actual debate. DebateFest was a hit, pumping excellent music, good cheer and high-spirits throughout the neighborhood. Too bad the storm front blew in so early, but even that couldn't really put a damper on a great day. Equal kudos to all the law enforcement agencies involved -- you couldn't walk anywhere in the DU neighborhood Wednesday without seeing uniformed cops on bikes, cops on foot and in K-9 units. Still, the vibe seemed friendly and relaxed. We are very proud of DU, and the way it represented Denver and Colorado.

DU Oct. 3 Presidential DebateFest Plans Shape Up
If you lived in the DU neighborhood in 2008 you probably remember the excitement and chaos when then-candidate Barack Obama campaigned at the University of Denver. Frenzied supporters of the candidate fought over parking spaces and some of those who scored parking did so by blocking driveways or other cars. Parking and driving in the neighborhood came to a standstill.
On Oct. 3 President Obama returns to DU, this time with Republican hopeful Mitt Romney in tow, and you can't help but wonder how their presence will impact the community.
One thing you can do is check out DU's Debate Community Impact page, which lists some things the neighborhood will face. For example, the site warns up that:
*From Sept. 21 to Oct. 3 one lane of Buchtel Avenue will be closed.
*Traffic will likely become "heavy and disruptive" around the neighborhood the week of Sept. 21. Expect parking and traffic disruptions and delays, road closures and limited access.
*Buchtel Boulevard and Asbury Avenue will be closed from University Boulevard to High Street, from Oct. 1 - 3.
*The RTD Light Rail system will be operating on Oct. 3, but the University Station will be closed.
*If you live in the Buchtel Plaza Apartments or University Park Towers, you won't be able to leave or enter your parking lot on these days (though you will have pedestrian access to your building). Instead, please park in the RTD parking garage at the University RTD light rail station off Buchtel Boulevard and High Street.
*If you are a DU Student, Staff or Alumni, you can attend DebateFest, a celebratory event with music, food, activities, and an outdoor debate watch party, from 3 - 9 p.m. on the University's Carnegie Green. To attend register here.
If you live in the neighborhood they'll consider letting you attend DebateFest but we are willing to bet that few neighborhood people will get the greenlight. DU is only allowing 5000 people to attend the festival, with staff, students and alumni will get first dibs.
In short, neighborhood residents' part in the democratic process will invovle cleaning up the aftermath of DebateFest fun. Well, look on the bright side, it can't be much worse than cleaning up red cups and vomit from your property during DU's finals week.
At any rate, more optimistic neighborhood residents can apply to attend DebateFest after Sept. 15, on the website.
DU is also looking for volunteers to work, so if you are interested check out the DebateFest page. This will probably be your best bet to attend, if you are a mere member of the community.

New DU Restaurant Twisters Joins the Scene
There's a new restaurant in the DU neighborhood, Twisters. The newest link from this New Mexico chain is inhabiting the space at 1535 East Evans Ave., where once stood Carl's Jr., and before that Weinerschnitzel, and before that...well...let's just say that this spot hasn't been successful for several restaurants (an irony for those of us who remember the mighty battle Franklin Street neighbors originally waged against the site being developed as a fast food spot). Ah well.
The newly opened Twisters seems to be doing good business, with most items in the $5-$8 range. The menu features hand-held and smothered burrito options, stuffed with beans and cheese or carne adovada. The restaurant's signature burrito is topped with french fries and smothered with New Mexican green or red chile. The massive burrito and tiny enchilada we ordered was pretty good, albeit a bit tepid. The green chile was quite good, but again a bit tepid. Give them a couple of weeks to get the glitches out of the kitchen and I think they might actually win over the neighborhood. Still, competition will be stiff with Illegal Pete's, the Border and even Chipolte (the least Hispanic burrito of all, albeit yummy).

Denver Police Nab Another Armed Robber in DU Neighborhood
Denver police have arrested a man after releasing photos and asking for the public's help in identifying a robbery suspect.
Investigators believe the suspect Leon Reimers, 25, is responsible for an aggravated robbery Oct. 15 in the Safeway parking lot at 2150 S. Downing St.
Reimers was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at 4050 S. Bannock St. in Englewood, Denver police said in a media release. He is being held at the Denver jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery, the Denver Post is reporting. Denver Post story here.

Armed robber on the loose in DU Hood
Denver police are looking for someone burglarizing and robbing homes around D.U. More than 11 burglaries have been reported since January in the area from East Asbury Ave. to East Illif Street.
The burglaries happen at night or early morning, when residents are in the home. In two cases, the perp pulled a gun on homeowners who stumbled into the crime. While details are skimpy, one of those cases must have been fairly recent, as the story was carried on all the broadcast affiliates this morning.
Despite concerns, police are not sharing a description of the thief. They are urging residents to lock their windows and doors.
