Georgia O'Keeffe Comes to Denver Feb. 10

Lucky lucky Denver. On Feb. 10 the Denver Art Museum will host a travelling exhibit - "Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam and the Land." 

I've got my fingers crossed for this show to be boffo. Organized by curators at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, N.M., the  exhibit addresses how O'Keefe's unique work was inspired by the vast beauty of the American Southwest, and by the Native American arts and culture of the region. Here's a comprehensive story about the exhibit published by the New York Times. when the exhibit rolled into the Big Apple last year.

The price of the DAM exhibit is included in general admission, making this exhibit fairly affordable. Also keep in mind that museum admission is FREE on the first Saturday of every month, which would be March 2 and April 6. The O'Keefe show runs through April 28.

Also, FREE guided tours of the exhibit are available daily at 1PM (meet at the first level elevator lobby of the Hamilton Building.).

Fun Things to Do in Denver, Oct. 26-29, 2012

St. John’s Cathedral – Concert at 7:30PM on Friday, Oct. 26. This concert by Saint John's own Cathedral Choirs will include Benjamin Britten's Antiphon, Gerald Finzi's "Welcome Sweet and Sacred Feast" and Jonathan Dove's "Seek Him that Maketh". Denver Art Museum  hosts its regularly scheduled Untitled  party on the last Friday of the month and the last one for this year is on Friday Oct. 26 from 6-10PM. This month's theme, Written Off examines artists forgotten in their own time, while offering odes to the museum’s own artworks that deserve a second look.  Untitled events are FREE with museum general admission ($10 for Colorado residents, $8 for students and seniors 65+). Students with ID get a  2for1 deal. FREE for members.  DAM is on 13th Avenue (Broadway and Bannock), Denver.

Dia de Los Muertos - Día de los Muertos is the theme at Denver Botanic Gardens  on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 5-8PM. Check out the schedule HERE, because there’s plenty of fun on tap, including a costume parade, sugar skull-making area, a papel picado-making area, pumpkin carving demos and more. Live music, food, arts and craft vendors will also be on hand. Admission for non-members is $12 for adults and $6 for children. 1007 York St., Denver.

Trick or Treat --  East Colfax merchants  host Boo & Brew  on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Halloween festivities are split into two parts – for little kids during the day and big kids at nighttime. From 1PM-4PM, kids and their parents can visit all the decorated businesses between Filmore and Monroe for an afternoon of FREE and safe trick-or-treating. Be one of the first 100 to show up  at  theHaunted House at GroundSwell (3121 E. Colfax Ave.) and receive a custom “Boo & Brew on Colfax” candy sack. Later that night the big kids can don a costume and hit the bars from 9PM-2AM in the Bluebird Theater area, which will offer discount cocktails, music, constume contests and all kinds of entertainment at the Rock Bar, 3014, Lost Lake Lounge, R-Bar, Goosetown Tavern and the Atomic Cowboy.

South Pearl Street – Dust off your best costume and your camera and head to South Pearl Street for all kinds of Halloween fun from 9AM -1PM on Saturday Oct. 27, when local merchants celebrate Halloween Fest. The fun will center on the 1500 block of South Pearl and feature holiday treats and old fashioned games.  There will be a kids’ costume contest at the north end of the 1500 block at noon, and a parade to Cameron Church at 1600 S. Pearl, where the judging will award prizes in the categories of homemade, Halloween theme, person, thing and critter.


Westernaires -- The dare-devil, horse-loving teens known as The Westernaires are performing their annual  Horsecapades show this weekend, and if you haven't seen their 250 rider high speed drill team, you are in for a treat. Admission is $8 at the door, and $10 to park at Denver National Western Events Center. There's three shows on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 10AM, 2PM and 7PM and on Sunday, Oct. 28 there is a 2PM matinee scheduled. 47th and Humboldt, Denver.  

Mt. Olivet Cemetery Crawl -  Meet up Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 - 1-4PM at  the Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 12801 W. 44th Ave. Join historian Tom Noel and a host of ghosts as they guide you through Colorado’s second largest  Necropolis. You will meet underground celebrities exhumed for this creepy, once-in-a-lifetime occasion, such as Horace (Dennis Gallagher) and Baby Doe Tabor (Charla Fleming), Mrs. William Gilpin (Debra Faulkner), and J.K. Mullen (John Stewart) and get a peak at the most elaborate private mausoleum in the Rockies. The Lumber Baron Inn -- The Altitude Paranormal Group  will be doing Lumber Baron events each Wednesday, including Halloween. Additional events are slated for the Monday and Tuesday prior to Halloween. On Friday Oct 26th APG will be holding an event co sponsored by Tivoli Beer at The Stage Stop in Rollinsville. APG says they've  investigated this bar/saloon built in 1868 several times and it is one of the most active they've experienced. St. John's Cathedral - Kicks off it's 2012-2013 concert season with a performance by Canadian Tristan Teo, a rising star in the next generation of North American pianists. Concert Friday Sept. 28 for the cost of a free will offering -- that means you should pay whatever you can muster. Living History - Check out this very cool FREE historical reenactment in Morrison on Friday Sept. 28 and Saturday Sept. 29.  Hosted by Red Rocks Baptist Church in Morrison Admission is $3 per person or a maximum of $15 per family - cash or check ONLY. Final Fridays Untitled event -  at the Denver Art Museum (DAM), give visitors an offbeat look at the DAM's collections and exhibitions. On Friday Sept. 28 from 6-10PM the Fresh Life theme, Untitled #51 (Second Life), will have DAM celebrate the artist and his exhibition El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote to You about Africa. Visitors can dive into the world of upcycling and repair, while getting a behind-the-scenes peek at the museum's fixer-upper projects. Buntport Theater's Joan and Charlie Discuss Tonight's Theme, local musicians and artists will join the fun.  Jared's Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off and Festival  - On Sat. Sept. 29 from 10-5PM. This is a fun FREE family event that features pumpkins the size of Volkswagen Beetles, Tons of  free activities  including the Galleria of Ghouls, straw maze, obstacle course and dog costume contests. For a small fee face painting, bouncy castle, and the petting zoo will be available. Giant and Weird Veggie Contest  (sunflowers, gourds, watermelon, tomatoes, and more)  Jump Bunch Denver will be on hand to wear out the kidlets, along with a story time at 10:30AM. Green Spaces Full Moon Harvest Festival - On Sat. Sept. 29 the 2012 Green Spaces Festival aims to draw a big crowd to  Denver's Five Points District to celebrate local food, art, culture and live music featuring some of Colorado's emerging top bands. FREE entry before dusk, $5 after dark. Local brews, more than 80 local vendors, food trucks, workshops and too much music to list. Check above website for details.

Denver's Blacktop Festival - a FREE celebration of music and arts, will be held from 10AM-2PM on Saturday Sept. 29, 2012. Is this going to be fun? You bet. You can hear live music or make your own art or watch a performance or run around in the grass. Play an interactive video game, or listen to a mini opera. You can buy your vegetables for the week, get your bike fixed, or read a magazine. Fun activities include a Zine Library, plaster body casting, Ballet Nouveau, comedy, live mural painting, tetherball and farmers' market. At the Denver Performing Arts Complex, 14th and Champa, Denver. FREE Concert at the Gothic Theater - The inaugural Reykjavik Calling showcase celebrates music emerging from Denver and Iceland with a FREE concert Saturday, Sept. 29. Doors open at 8PM. at the Gothic Theatre at 3262 S. Broadway, Englewood.

Our Lady Guadalupe FREEBIES in Denver -- Museum Pass and Marketplace

No image is as distinctively Mexican as the Virgin of Guadalupe, with her characteristic spiky aura and blue robe with gold stars. The Virgin of Guadalupe, who is also called Our Lady of Guadalupe, was actually an apparition who, appeared on  December 12, 1531 to Juan Diego while he was walking towards Hill of Tepeyac. The Virgin eventually became a symbol of freedom for the Mexican people as  Mexico struggled for independence. She also represents s a mixture of the indigenous people and the Spaniards, and is often considered the first Mestiza, or native Mexican, being neither Spanish or Indian. Today the Virgin De Guadalupe is celebrated as both a religious iconic and pop culture symbol of Mexico. Thousands of people travel to Mexico every year to visit her shrine, leave flowers on her altar, and pray for her intercession. 

 

Her feast day (December 12) is celebrated as a Mexican national holiday, with traditional food, dancing and processionals. Here in Denver, the Virgin of Guadalupe is being celebrated throughout December.

To honor Our Lady of Guadalupe the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is offering FREE general admission for three weeks starting Dec. 11 so the public can view a painting of the Lady created in 1779 by Sebastian Salcedo. Untitled #40 (Grounded) at Denver Art Museum Aug. 26

We love Untitled parties at DAM. Love it! Live music, theater, free food and a cash bar provide just enough fun. Tonight, Aug. 26 will focus on All Things Clay, so outside a raku kiln will fire up artists' creations and heat up visitors' own clay chef hors d'oeuvres. Inside, curators will talk on their soapboxes, schooling visitors in contemporary artists’ most extreme uses of clay. A geologist will lead a detour on the peculiar particulars of an artistic medium offered up by the earth and a smart phone scavenger hunt takes guests to the far reaches of the museum on a quest for clay. The end of the evening brings the premiere screening of a collective clay animation creation, projected on the soaring walls of the atrium for all Untitled visitors to see. Untitled #39 (It's Complicated)

So, there was this Dutch artist who supposedly cut his ear off, the result of a heated debate between he and a certain other artist, but some people think that’s a cover up and, well… it’s complicated and we all agree that the art world is anything but simple. On Friday June 24, this month's Untitled #38 (Tea Party) at the Denver Art Museum offers a dose of class as we learn about the finer side of clay. Celebrate the artists of the Marvelous Mud exhibitions by lifting your pinkies and drinking in the fineries, dainty doodads, and lovely ceramics. Check out the EIGHT!!! ah-ma-zing ceramic installations throughout the buildings.
