Build a FREE Bike at Derailer Bicycle Collective

The Derailer Bicycle Collective Build-a-Bike program is for Denver's bike-less population. The collective, a FREE, volunteer-run community bike shop, helps people build a bike from the ground up, learning about all the working parts, internal mechanisms, and maintenance along the way. Everyone is welcome, but folks from the west side of town, and those down on their luck, get special priority.

If you are interested, drop by the Derailer at 411 Lipan St. and sign up. With the help of a volunteer you will pick out a frame that fits your body and preference, and begin making it your own. The process will take at least two three-hour sessions to complete, during which most every aspect of a bike will be taken on, repaired or installed on the bike, including the drive train, wheels, steering and brakes.

The collective will house the work-in-progress for you, but if you do not show up or call for two weeks in a row, your bike will return to the up-for-grabs pile. The group also is working to provide bicycle helmets and locks for everyone who "graduates" from the Build-a-Bike Program. Make sure to sign up! Thursdays and Fridays 3 - 7 PM. 303-223-7174 They are also looking for bike donations. More info here.
