DU Community Urged to Protest Safeway's Gas Station Bid

The Denver Planning Board has scheduled a hearing on the proposed Safeway gas station (at the corner of Evans and South Downing). The hearing is slated for 3PM on Nov. 7.  in  the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building at 201 W. Colfax Avenue in the 4th floor conference room #4F6 / 4G2 .

Safeway is requesting a zoning amendment that would allow construction of a gas station in the parking lot behind Morgan's Liquors. Why do we believe this is a bad idea? The traffic congestion in the Morgans/Safeway/1stBank parking lot is already over the top, as is traffic at the increasingly busy Downing and Evans intersection. A gas station will only bring in more traffic and more accidents at the already overtaxed and busy  intersection.

On hand to represent local residents at the hearing will be local group University Neighbors. The group is opposing the plan and requesting that before the City takes any action, Safeway should provide traffic studies, parking studies and an environmental impact report.

All are welcome to attend and speak at this hearing
