Is Organic Always Better/Safer for You?

One of our readers, Robert, recently chastised me for listing sales at high-end grocers like Whole Foods, Sunflower Market, etc. Robert points out that the best food deals for us broke folks are found at more traditional, mainline stores like King Soopers, Albertsons or Safeway.

Robert's point is well taken. But some of our readers have repeatedly requested that we list organic food deals and I myself, struggle to shop both conventional and organic products. We're always hearing about the quantity of pesticides that are used to grow conventional vegetables and fruits, and the health dangers that they present. But yes, organic food is pretty expensive. Still, the good news is you don't need to go completely organic to avoid a lot of the contamination. According to the non-profit Environmental Working Group there are 12 main offenders that are laden with pesticides and that you should strive to buy in organic form. The EWG has labled them the “dirty dozen” and they are as follows:

Celery
Peaches
Strawberries
Apples
Blueberries
Nectarines
Bell Peppers
Spinach
Cherries
Kale/Collard Greens
Potatoes
Imported Grapes

The group's "Clean 15" that are safe to buy conventionally?
Onions
Avocados
Frozen sweet corn
Pineapples
Mangos
Frozen sweet peas
Asparagus
Kiwi
Cabbage
Eggplant
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Grapefruit
Sweet potato
Honeydew Melon

For a complete list, check out the EWG's website here.
