FREE July 4 Fireworks in Denver, 2011

Hurrah! My favorite holiday is July 4. No gift buying required, just plenty of good eats, friendship and fireworks. Perfect for us broke folk! Hopefully we will enjoy good weather over the weekend. If you are still making plans, consider some of these local activities in and around South Denver.  And please do your pets a favor and leave them at  home.

If you want to see lots of shows and don't mind if you aren't super close to the action, there are options. If you live in South Denver, consider going to Ruby Hill Park, to see ALL the fireworks across town. Native Americans used the park's high bluff as a lookout point and for good reason....you will be able to see the entire front range light up starting at about 9PM. Be aware that plenty of people will be lighting up other things (including firecrackers) within the park boundaries and toilet facilities are somewhat limited. It can be rowdy get-together, but it is a ton of fun. Please leave your dog at home -- too many surrounding firecrackers. Street parking only. South Platte River Drive and Florida.

Another, more low-key local option for a good view of Front Range fireworks? Bates-Logan Park, 638-658 E. Bates in Englewood. The hill offers nice views of the Front Range fireworks. Come early, bring chairs and bug spray and some chow and settle in for the show. More family oriented.

Front Range Fireworks Shows and Activities:
Come to downtown's Civic Center Park for a FREE community event on Sunday July 3 featuring a patriotic concert by The Colorado Symphony, an innovative light show and stunning rooftop fireworks display atop the Denver City and County Building. Seating is first-come, first-served. Sound systems and video boards will be activated to make sure people sitting as far away as the Capitol steps can enjoy the show. Food vendors will be on-site, but picnics are also welcome. 8-10PM July 3. Broadway and Colfax Ave.

Check out the Denver Country Club on July 4. The club, which seldom opens to the public, is opening its gates on the 1st and University East Entrance. You are invited to watch their fireworks show for FREE, but remember that you can only enter the Country Club ON FOOT. No bikes, dogs, cars, scooters, etc. No alcohol is allowed and all coolers will be searched before entry. The Fire Marshal will decide when the grounds are at capacity – so arrive early if you really want a spot. Fireworks begim at dark. Not sure when the gates open. For information, call 303-733-8242.  If you can't get in, set up camp at the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot across the street for a good view.

Enjoy the 9th annual July 4th Celebration, co-sponsored by the Washington Park East and West Washington Park neighborhood associations. The day’s festivities begin at 11AM at the Dos Chappell Bath House (not the boathouse, as in past years), with kids and their parents exploring the Station 21 fire truck in the Bath House parking lot. Special guests are the Denver Police Mounted Patrol and their noble steeds!  Providing a patriotic soundtrack for the celebrants will be the Denver Municipal Band’s Brass Quintet, with pianist Hank Troy. Families are encouraged to arrive early so the kidlets have time to spruce up their strollers, trikes, and bikes for the 4th of July Parade, which begins about 11:45AM in the parking lot just west of the Bath House. FREE ice cream and beverages will be available immediately following the parade, while supplies last. Be sure to bring a comfortable blanket or chairs as needed.

The full 40-piece Denver Municipal Concert Band returns to Wash Park July 4 at 7:30PM in the meadow (south of the recreation center) for your listening pleasure. FREE. Bring low chairs, a picnic and bug spray. Enjoy!

Don't miss the celebration at Observatory Park (between Fillmore and Milwaukee streets, south of Evans Ave.) at 10AM on July 4, for the annual Bike Parade and Water Spray. Bring your kids and their decorated bikes, and costumed dogs are also welcomed. Both will parade along
E. Warren Ave. Also, Denver Fire Department Station #24 will bring its pumper truck to give a good soaking to all wishing to participate. he VFW Band will be on hand before and during the parade offering up appropriate patriotic tunes to inspire participants and onlookers as well.  The University Park Moms Group will provide free popsicles and sell soft drinks and hot dogs. Proceeds benefit the “free” toy bin in Observatory Park. Questions? Interest in volunteering? Contact events@upcc.us, or call Dana O’Connor at 303-359-8858.

In Glendale, fireworks go up from Creekside Park on Saturday July 2, so they can be seen from all over. The City recommends the intersection of Cherry and Exposition. The Colorado Blvd. Whole Foods parking lot is one of the best places to watch the fun, plus it hosts a  family-oriented BBQ with games, music, entertainment, and food prior to the fireworks show. The all you can eat menu is $12 for adults and $7 for kids and will include burgers, hot dogs, brats, veggie burgers, side salad, fresh fruit, pie and soda from the traveling Oogave Soda Van—a locally-made soda bottled in Denver.  This year’s celebration will take place from 5 – 9 PM and families are encouraged to come and enjoy music, games, food, and open seating all afternoon.
